I am not complaining about the score, I just want to know why this image didn't appeal to people.

I assume you meant this:

If so, I gave it a 6, based on the value of art it gives. But there are a some major technical problems that are likely what kept it scoring low:
1. The focus is in a weird place. Our eyes are not drawn to the focus point, giving it an out of focus feel.
2. There seems to be a lot of artifacts. Did you super heavily crop this? Or save it at a lot file quality?

Yes, that is the photo. I did heavily crop it. Thank you.

Images like these need to be taken with a good macro lens otherwise like mike said when you crop it down you get artifacts and a soft focus. I'm guessing that might have been your problem.

When you're shooting at that small an aperture (this is f22) diffraction is going to impact your ability to capture and render details. Even with macro lenses you're better off focus stacking than trying to get it all at once.

I gave this a 7, actually. When I ignore the artifacting of it and just soak in the ambiance, the image has rather an entrancing, otherworldly glow to it.

Dang! Look who dropped in for a visit!! Hi Jen!! *waves wildly*

Donna - the images is lovely, very "madonna and child". But as others have pointed out, it's the technicals that brought down the score.

I agree with the other comments... but I do add that Free Study challenges are held to a higher standard with the voters... since the entrants have an entire month to come up with their best and there is no topic requirement.

All of that said, I liked your image... thought it looked like a severe crop... but still liked the colors.

I gave it a five and I'm looking forward to seeing more from you!
