I thought to share what and how I did this and I am sure many of you would have done it. I know it was not a great shot so was not expecting it to do good anyway :)

My setup was something like this though in below I have flowers but in the challenge shot it was eyes :)

I used double lens with reverse ring coupling between the two. I tried using 85mm but it was going way close in eyes and I was not able to focus so end up with 50mm only :)

You're gaining some good experience with how hard it is pull off good results at high magnifications. In this case, I wonder if you really needed magnification in excess of about 1.5:1? If not, then it might have been easier to add an extension tube to the 100 Macro than reversing the 50mm. I've always found reversed-lens combinations rather cumbersome to deal with.

I have ordered the extension tube and it is in the mail so hopping to get it soon. I will try some closeup shots once I have it :)

I think you'll find the extension tube in combination with the 100/2.8 Macro to be a good combination. Did you order a set of tubes, or a single length?

Yup it is Macro Extension Tube Set :)

Good deal. With the 100/2.8 Macro, if you use 50mm of extension tubes, you in theory should get 1.5x magnification (1.0 + (50/100)), the native magnification plus the ratio of the FL over the extension. In fact, you'll see more than this, because the FL of the 100/2.8 Macro is less than 100mm at full magnification; it's about 67mm in fact! So in order to get to 1.5:1, you need about 37mm of extension, or a 12mm tube plus a 25mm tube.

Wow!!!

That is definitely good piece of information, I will keep eye on this and share outcome when I get extension tube.

Here's a guide to some combinations and their respective magnifications:

The coverage numbers refer to a FF sensor; for APS-C, we'd just divide those by 1.6 for Canon (or 1.5 for Nikon)

you will LOVEEEE the tube set with that 100mm. Just know you have to add more light because you do loose some by adding those on, but I think you already knew that.

Enjoy it! Welcome to macro land! Kinda gets addicting :-))

For on the go kinda of things I have brought both the raynox lenses 150 and the 250 which clips on and they do amazing with the 100mm as well.

I learn so much from most everything you post. I had not even thought of using the extension tubes. I'll have to look that up to see what I need.

May I ask what/where for the extension tubes you bought? I might surprise the wife!

This is what I ordered I ordered manual first because I wanted to understand how it works and how much I would gain before I spend money on auto focus one as those a about 7 times price of this.

Definitely a good step up in magnification with the extension tube! The great part is there is no added glass to degrade image quality.

Yeahhh you got it.. you are def in macro land now and there is no turning back or getting out, it is super addictive.

The auto focus tubes are pricy!!! But y you can still get the same result in the ones you have, I prefer the manual tubes anyway because of the focus stacking and manual focus I feel you get the best shot with.. I have never used auto in macro anyway..they are super fun and cheap.
