I think the scores I dish out are affected by my mood. In an predictable way; better mood = better votes. You?

I think there were some people voting in the last ten hours who didn't have a smile on their face.

For me, that's why I go through twice. To be sure.

I suspect the votes I give are affected by mood. I am pretty sure my mood is affected by the votes I receive. If both are true things could go down in an ugly spiral. I try not to complain about scores, but it feels like I have received more 1, 2, and 3 votes this week than I have in the last six months.

I think you're right Penny. It may be the all night gang that gives the low votes. Who knows. I too vote then go back over and give at least 20% remarks. I'm not sure about the free study. There are 120 entries. WOW

I think that it is all natural and expected. We are not robots. On the plus side, once you know and are aware of this, go over the entries at least twice to correct any potential the injustices that may have been caused by your mood ;-)

I usually do this and most of the time the votes in the second pass go up. Almost never down.

Most of my votes in FS & Best of seem like someone sh*t in their Cheerios.....

I hope it's just the winter weather and in the spring we'll all see exceptional scores...

Only if you live in California.

j/k ... don't know why that just popped into my head. :-)

There is your initial emotional response, but are people too lazy to think and reason with why they're voting the way they are? If I give a low score, I have been trying to feedback to them why that was. Same if I think it's a high score, praise for their originality or narartive, etc.

I'm definitely not shy of giving out tens! In a way, I think my rating criteria is set by the entries themselves. Within a challenge there will be at least one that is a ten.

If you stop to compare all entries and you can easily create a good guidance for the standard that's within that challenge.

I have been paying attention to "average vote cast" and there are too many 3.8 and 4.1's. It is an attitude problem.
Unreasonable expectations and negativity which really does effect the health of the site. So many people have left
because of low voting and no comments.
I just keep trying to compensate by voting higher than i used to. It's the 'when they go low' syndrome...

I'll say this - after voting on the pink/red challenge and then moving on to the incidental art challenge, I found myself annoyed at any entries that were overly pink or red. I didn't down vote them, but mainly because I realized my mood had been affected. I recall many times though where I get topic fatigue while voting. I suspect others do as well and I would guess that if you entered an amazingly perfect soft focus llama photo in a "Soft Focus" challenge right after the "Llama" challenge, your score will suffer for it.

That parallels something I've always thought; that if you submit several images in a row obviously from the same shoot, your scores will drop with the later images. Arguably, this happens because a significant number of voters consciously or subconsciously feel a need to ding the photographer for being lazy...

A.k.a. the wine glass effect :)

But seriously, when I see this happen, I don't vote down based on laziness. But I do vote down the images that are shoehorned into a challenge. Probably more harshly than other shoehorns...because the photographer was lazy. Hehehe :)

"Lazy" or "efficient"?

I've sometimes "covered" three challenges on a single photo excursion, but I try to make the photos quite different from each other, not just different views of the same subject ... I've never noticed if it affected the scores of the later pictures.

Probably because you've never, like me, entered 3 shots in a row of the same sunset :-) I can be very lazy...
