Three images in voting, all at 5.43 !
I have the monopoly of the mid 5.
And I always start with a few 8s or 7s and 6s , after that, the deluge...

My score is very, very calm on a stable 5.00

I don't have a horse in this race. I just finished voting though, and there are a few that I really really like. I will try to leave comments on them all (about half-way there).

Thankyou somebody, actually Mr Nobody, I think you liked mine, as much as me... rising up from the fours now ;)

a little birdie atheist told me
there is no stipulation that these challenge entries need to be about a recent holiday

Hey did anybody notice Timothy was back ;-))))

Hello!

I have six wonderful awesome comments. Score is slowly going up. But mind you I was in the low fours so it needs to go up a lot!

@skewsme Holiday, what holiday, everyday is a holiday for me :-)

I totally agree!

But, I also think that everyone has their own idea of what is Calm or Bright.

And we should not judge them for their idea... but for their image quality... much like we should not judge nude shots just because we don't personally like nudity.

I disagree, though, about snakes shots. Ha!

They should all be a one. :D

I'm irrationally afraid of snakes.

*grin*

Just kidding... I either skip over them... or brace myself and vote according to the quality and composition.

Then, I click quickly by. :D

Carry on...

I posted this because some are voting down shots if not xmas themed.

I figured that would happen when I read the description - even posted to that effect here.

I really do think challenge descriptions skew (no personal pun intended) both entries and voting.

I finished badly on this, but that's not why I'm whining .... At least I don't think so. The description said "tis the season" which implies the HOLIDAY season and I shot and voted accordingly. Which brings up a question: do MOST of you vote mostly or solely on the challenge requirements/theme or purely on the quality of the photo? A white car in a deserted forest on a sultry summer day is calm and bright, but may be the best entry technically and creatively. Do you grade it down because it as nothing to do with the "season"?

I'm not sure how you know this (unless they commented as doing so). But only 4 of the top 10 had anything to do with "xmas".

I think that's exactly what happened, Karen. I do see that skewsme had a comment noting that her entry was not Christmas related. And see Luciemac's question.

Descriptions, no matter how well intentioned, tend to throw some of us off, whether when we are planning and taking our shot or when we are voting or both.

As for me, I decided to ignore the implied suggestion (that's pretty vague anyway, isn't it?) description this time, both when I went out shooting and when I voted, mostly because there WAS another challenge coming up that was clearly about holidays.

Aren't we getting a bit ridiculous? Christmas or not, no need to get fussy and suspicious.
And, by the way, "calm and bright" reminded me of:
Silent Night
Holy Night
All is calm
All is bright
etc
I might get suspicious also, but the ribbons did not have to do with anything, no shred of propaganda....

Oh, I think you've misunderstood - at least misunderstood me. For me this was absolutely NOT about the winners or top finishers in the challenge. It wasn't really about the challenge at all. It was and is about the effect that adding descriptions has. You (the "royal you", mariuca, not you personally :) ) want a challenge on the topic of calm? Say so. Don't go adding pretty phrases because those extra words do influence some of us and that's not the intention of the person writing them. If they aren't essential to the intent of the challenge, leave them off. That's all I was trying to say.

I did not refer to you in particular Nikki - I just quoted the whole conversation.
To me the challenge title had a clear reference to Silent Night - but honestly, I do not care much about meeting the challenge ad litteram nor do I endorse straying totally from it.
In the end it's the photograph isn't it?
The rest is superfluous.
