Several outtakes for this challenge but this is the one I considered most seriously.

Had a blast with this kid doing these photos. 50F outside and he never complained about being barefoot.

I like this image... but I'd have cropped it to make it much more intimate.

:) This is already a huge crop, Lydia. It started off with lots more on the sides. I declined to come in closer because of what I didn't want to cut off - any of her hair, the dog's paw, any of her hand. I do see that your crop hits us over the head with the affection between them and that's what I was going for in considering this one. (ETA: And I should also have said that since it's a more impactful crop, it's stronger, so thanks so much for suggesting it.)

Maybe a little more back story is in order . . .

Mary is a neighbor - a widow of six years who moved into town from a farm after her husband died. So she lives alone and is incredibly independent. Yes, she makes quilts - lots of them. Gorgeous, elaborate quilts. The one you see in my entry is finished except for the quilting - it's a combination of pieced and machine embroidered work and she's making it for her own bed, but most of them she just makes and gives away to her family. Quilting, she confided to me during the shoot, is what she does to keep busy! -- and when she's depressed. Her husband bought her all the quilting equipment, and working on quilts brings him back to her. She goes to the "Y" six mornings a week for exercise and swimming classes. She does all her own yard work, except for trimming the trees; she was actually out mowing the yard when I went down to ask whether she would agree to be a subject for me. She walks Rudy at least twice a day. And I can assure you not a thing in her quite large home was out of place when I dropped in for the shoot - which was less than two hours after I asked her to be my subject.

As I said, I was really surprised that she agreed to let me photograph her, but it turned out that her reluctance to be a subject (which was very real) was overcome by her desire to please and do a favor for a neighbor. That's Mary. I should have known.

Anyway, I told her that I wanted to get shots of her with Rudy to try to capture a little of their mutual affection and of her with her quilts to try to capture her love of that activity.

Oh, and one other thing. I think I should mention that in our conversation as I shot, I found out that she turns 80 this year - may already be for all I know as we didn't discuss the date, just the fact that her quilting group is making a quilt for her because they do that for every member when they turn 80!

You cannot even imagine my pleasure when, upon seeing a few quick prints of some of the shots, she said, hesitantly, "Do you think I could use one of these for a Christmas card this year? I've never done that before, but I think some of my friends and relatives who haven't seen me since Jack died would like to see me now."

So . . . (and this is, in length, at least, a very Lydia-like response - which is appropriate to a Lydia suggestion, I think LOL) . . . we come back round to my reluctance to crop more, even for a competition. I think Mary would want all of her hair, especially, in there; and I think she would want more, not less, of Rudy in there, too :)
