I did a quick search and found this thread from 9 years ago but nothing since? - did we have an F8 challenge?

Seems a weird one to me especially as there are no extra rules like 'you will be disqualified if you don't shoot F8' because I doubt anybody here can say with conviction what shots are F8 or not? So, a free study and you'll get DNMC votes if your using a 600mm lens at F8 and no real dof or a 15mm fisheye and 99% of the image is sharp? Then there are sensor sizes.

I'm not even sure if my HTC One mini2 has a manual mode.

I'd like to see an F22 high-key challenge in minimal edit ... ;)

It goes back to the old photojournalistic maxim: "F/8 and be there!"

Although I'm tiring of the recent amount of "free study" challenges, I do like it that this one at least requires someone to learn something about his camera to meet the topic, if he doesn't already know.

Seems like it should be DQ'd if it's not f/8, though... otherwise it's truly just another Free Study.

The challenge has been updated with a flag to require compliance with the aperture specification. We're allowing a tolerance of .2 in either direction, as some P&S cameras can be sloppy that way; you set them to f/8 aperture priority and they return, say, f/7.9 in the EXIF.

I tend to do that too.

with the Leica Mono and Leica lenses that are not 6bit coded there is quite a bit of guesswork done by the camera regarding f-stop I have shot off a set of photos at f2.8 and had readings of f1.5 so I might have to miss this one out which is a shame.

I use MF lenses with my XT1 but that would say f0

The old motorsport photography maxim was "f/8 at 1/500". Used to get fairly good results in the film days...

We had to have this sooner or later, because, well, it's F8.

f8 was the go-to setting for all professional nature photographers, so that the whole of the beast would be in focus. Difficult without good equipment and technique at golden light time.Nowadays it's choose any old f-stop you like and the roaming ISO band as wide as the Amazon will take care of the rest.

What we need is an F42 - that would be the answer to life, the universe and everything :)

If we don't do it right, do we F4 F8?

I appreciate the extra rule. Thanks!

Does this mean I cannot use my legacy lenses?? They don't transmit data.

Wow, I just looked at one of my lenses and realized, "this one goes to f11!"

You know, the challenge is f/8 -- if you shoot at F8 you may experience unexpected results, and experience a horrible f8 ... but we will f8 you if you absolutely master the technique, making a ribbon a virtual f8 accompli ...

Unfortunately, that's correct. No legacy lenses. No lensbabies on this one either :-)

I knew there was a reason I went ahead and picked up the kit lens with my A7m2! :-) I'll have to put it back in my camera bag (hmmm ... actually put it ON the camera). LOL

So does this mean no Save For Web? Or how will you know who to DQ?

Yep, I was just checking my Rokinon 85mm exif:

The f/stop, focal length, and lens are all invalid data. :(

We never DQ without seeing an original, unless it's for something like a copyright statement on the entry, so we'll know when we see the EXIF.

And no Leica M cameras. Leica only estimates the aperture based on the light hitting the sensor as there is no electronic aperture information passed from the lens to the camera. Chances are, even when shot at f8, it won't necessarily register f8 on the EXIF. Conversely, the camera could incorrectly register f8 when the image was shot at a different setting.
