On or off a bird, close up or not, but keeping feathers as the focal point - make it exciting under advanced editing rules.

A bit surprised this is doing so poorly. Oh well, goes to show I don't know what is DPC popular.

Phil just ignore the first 30 votes, during this silly time, and then time will tell. Pretty sure yours and most will rise, I know mines not worth the score I have now, ce la vie!

Personal worst right now... this DPL is a via crucis
06/22/2015 08:28:59 AM · #14
I have voted on all entries and given and average score of 6.7284 which is in line with my usual average given. I am in a DPL team. It is not changing how I vote.
My score had a strong start but is now going down down down

Last time I had a score this low was 2006...

Dang, people...

my hypothesis on the lower scoring lately, and YES, it is related to DPL....

perhaps the voters are voting 5 much more just because there are double or triple the normal number of entries in the DPL challenges compared to non-DPL challenges... and maybe they tend not to give out a lot of >5 votes per challenge, so those few >5 votes get much diluted in a sea of 5's

that said, i'm at meh at 15 votes, which i thought woudl at least be in tiny violin range.

My saying since the DPL started is "4 is the new 5". There are so many entries that I think some feel the need to differentiate between the plethora of shots that used to be considered "just OK", and 4's get handed out because you can't vote 4 1/2 or 5 1/2 while not wanting to laud something with a 6. But I may just be over thinking it.

And again the cancer of using the scale to RANK photos rather than RATE photos rears it's ugly festering spewing head.

A photo that is a 6 is a 6 with 1 entry or 2000 entries. Number of entries has no honest relevance to the voting process.

end rant

Sounds about right. The scale of 1-10 is small for >160 entries. That said, there still are the 7, 8, 9 and occasional 10 entries. And statistically speaking, the increase in 5s, 6s, 7s, 8s and 9s has been mathematically sound, although it doesn't feel that way while voting. At least for me this holds true.

I think the overall quality of the entries is a bit higher too, so the scale has shifted a bit.

Anyway, my feather is meh, but I don't like it myself really. Signs, feathers, graves and pastels are all not really that interesting to me; although I should maybe try to fit them to my interests (I'm learning still).

There have been times, klkitchens will remember them, too, where 200 entries in a challenge was just average. That said, please follow his advice and RATE photos by their own merits and not, how they compare to others.

Edited for typo.

Ah yes... the good old days. When a Free Study might have 400-500 entries too :)

I'm enduring for the DPL as long as a can for my team and then after that I'm gone again. Tired of wasting time here. I'll shoot and just share on Google+, Facebook and 500px and other sites where at least I'll get honest votes and assessments.

ROFLMAO now that is the funniest thing I have read in awhile. Guess you like the places where you can post a cellphone snap of the shit you just left in a McDonald's bathroom and get 10,000 likes and comments about how great a photographer you are.

Spell much?

Actually no. I like honest feedback as I said. I don't want coddling, but likewise I don't want to waste time shooting for challenges here only to be torpedoed by people with no skill and no comprehension of how to use a rating scale.

Apparently the same could be said for posting in threads here. Sheesh.

I'm with you. A 5 is still a 5 for me, a 6 a 6, and a 4 a 4. My average vote is in line with what it's always been.

I am simply positing that when seeing almost twice as many images as what was the normal around here for a while (FS aside), it's entirely possible that when handing out a 5 to a large subset of images, the next image may somehow seem "lesser" comparatively (after handing out fifty 5's) when it may not have previously (when handing out a dozen and a half). Your personal idea of "Just OK" now has dividing lines that didn't exist with 60-70 images. If you review your votes afterward like I do (fatigue can set in over the hours it takes to really vote on 160 images), it's tough to stare at a page and a half of 5's and not start to think that these are somehow unequally equal. If that thought process enters your voting then the 4 doesn't result from ranking, it's from a reassessing of your scale.
