I think back to a special Saturday last year at Bojangles’ Southern 500 Nascar race about my most favorite memory that happened was during the first 5 laps. I was using my video camera during the first 2 laps and I was in the moment of "oh my, this is so cool excitement". I was checking the race cars out trying to see all of the details in the cars as well as looking for drivers inside of them that I wasn’t expecting to feel so much wind that it nearly knocked me and my son Casey back to our seats. I then had to blink my eyes sit down and grab my sun glasses. You see all the cars got their speed up finally really fast at full speed in the third lap. The sound was loud and I knew right then and there that it was only getting started that the noise from the car’s engine was getting louder the faster they got. Prior to the race my husband Randy said, " You won't need ear plugs I have been to the race and didn’t need them." Let me tell you I was sure thinking to myself at that time as the 4th lap began ( Yeah right glad I didn’t listen to you. ) I was reaching for ear plugs and started to hand my oldest son Zach some because he had his ears covered. I grabbed me a pair and struggled to put them in. Meanwhile I looked at Casey and he had his hat covering his entire face shielding it while at the same time he was hollering something like this " cooool, wow, aaaaaaaaaaaaawwwwwwwww". I could barely hear him as the cars went swoosh a sound of a loud scream by... I know why he had his face covered because I had been feeling all of the bits of pieces tiny stings some big, some just taps, like a swarm of dust, with rocky sandy dirt and black rubber hitting me. I lifted his hat to see the smile all over his face and I was just amused as to this was something else. The actual first impressions that will stay with me and my family I know because words can hardly describe all of the adrenaline that was going through us. Before the 5th lap occurred Randy looked at me and shouted something that I couldn’t hear him actually saying it was like I was reading his lips, "Put some ear plugs in his ears and hand me some too!!" I look over at Zach and he is blinking his eyes from the wind hitting us as the cars took another pass. Are seats where on the second row and so close to the cars that I was glad there was a row of people in front of me because it was like a human shield. They had to be blocking a little bit of the debris. The first 5 laps was happening so fast that I also knew then that this was going to be an exciting time and that the next 362 laps would be over with pretty fast. It was very exciting and a lot of fun to watch a Nascar event in person for sure!

"Glory Days"

Photos of my son's band. Not that it was his band, but he was part of it. These are from a few different shows, 2010 to 2012.

Really stunned and inspired by the response to this. Here's my own attempt at this genre.

tonfanau: the place of the waves - an excavation of memory

It's quite long - 12 minutes - and has sound so headphones or speakers turned on would be good if possible.

What a beautiful experience this has been. Thanks, Don, for inspiring it. I'd had no intention of entering, but I'm glad I stepped outside my little big box and did it :-)

ETA: I just watched Clive's ( Rooum)'s piece and it's absolutely beautiful.

I agree with the Bear. This is quite awesome. Thanks for this one Don, you even inspired me to go use the new camera for a jaunt around town.... (as an aside, watch that ISO rise with time on my set)..

I think it would be awesome if we could do more of these.

Thanks Don & Cory for creating this opportunity. There are some fabulous entries. My internet went down 30 mins before rollover, and came on two minutes after, so it looks like I'm organised for next month.

And here I thought you were just taking time to get over the trauma of acquiescing to my request to be on the jury. ;)

I think he was hoping the white-jacket people would have caught up with you and removed you from the scene by now.
