I was looking at an older camera I had and Dallas says "what is this?" Asking about opening the back. I showed him how it opened and he said "what goes here?" I told him, "film".
His response: "Film? What's film?" (In that ascending tone of curiosity).

Awwww... Film. I remember those days. He'll never understand the excitement and anticipation of waiting to get your film developed. Lol

He said "it's a good thing they made these new cameras, huh mom?"

Adorable. :)

Just wanted to share. I thought it was cute.

I doubt I would have stuck with photography had they not :-)

You should have told him that it was something that you use along with record players. :)

Huh? Why not? Film is alive and well. And I experience that anticipation almost every day.

Send him over to play!

You really think your backup CDs will last as long as a glass negative? Every time I hold up one of those discs I can't see any pictures!

They may not, but I'm sure the hard drive, backup hard drive, and online backup service are a better option than a negative.

As long as you maintain the redundancy by replacing any of the three in a timely manner.

Film and plates deteriorate. Digital images are intangible. Each medium has its place, and one doesn't replace the other. They can coexist.

And there's the rub -- it requires constant updating of media and formats, and the time and labor to transfer data, and none of it works without electricity.

I heard a report about some place where major movies are archived (salt dome in Kansas or something), and the estimated cost to maintain a feature movie. For traditional film, they estimated about $16,000/year (climate control, security, etc.), while for digital they were figuring it would eventually run more like $160,000/year when you figured in hardware and software upgrades, labor, etc.

I try to print "important" images onto real "photo paper" so I can see them without a device. I hope both digital and (semi-)analog processes/formats continue to coexist as long as possible

My hard drive, my backup hard drive, my replacement hard drive, and....

I can no longer read my MFM hard drives, my RLL hard drives, and IDE is an endangered species. If you don't grab one of the few remaining USB to IDE interfaces, no such luck.

My first digital camera recorded on 3.5" floppies. Tough to find a drive these days. My first Mavica was purchased 14 years ago. My grand children have no way to view the image, unless they can find a floppy drive. My great grandfather's image is on a glass plate negative. Still an easily processed image.

I have a feeling that this thread needs a bump!

Well, it's good to see you!

Indeed it does need a bump -- maybe even a side challenge. I've been making color prints lately from my 35mm negatives, and I can't seem to stop. And my Yashica Mat 124G just arrived in the mail yesterday. I'm giddy.

By the way, I saw your Family Remix series on Flickr -- quite amazing.

I will post again some stuff via flickr in the film SC as soon as I get my 7 or so films developed from my recent stay in Arles, Marseilles, Paris, Antwerpen and now Den Bosch.

Keep up your great color prints, I'm envious! ;)

No, I have no back up CDs and nothing lasts forever nor would I want it to.

They are captured moments and like the moment they will be gone.
