No, this isn't a thread to complain about my score. I just spent a lot of time on this photo and the placement is far enough back that I don't think anyone is going to read my notes on how I did it. So by creating this thread I am going to force you to take a closer look :)

I got a validation request in the middle of the challenge, so I also wanted to explain to those who may have thought this wasn't done legally how I did it. It was done in a single exposure and there are only 4 tulips in the vase. Read my notes to find out how:

Not as unappreciated as you think. I reviewed the challenge results this morning and yours was one of the first ones I read the notes for :-). Got a kick out of your exposure time, and your explanation of how you did it made perfect sense. It was a really interesting image and take on the challenge.

I voted on it with the assumption that it was a long exposure, or a lens cap taken on and off. I did expect someone to question it, however. I usually don't give better than a 5 or 6 for even a well done floral shot, but this got an 8 from me.

Wonderful result - thanks for the notes as well as for pointing us to them.

I am convinced by your profile pic that I should really read the notes. Very well executed either way, even without the explanation.

I gave it a 7 - loved the image. Seems folks here are too busy voting to knock each other down than to help build up each other. Would be nice if folks would start really giving the scores folks deserve and help each other learn more but that horse has been beat to death. :(

LOL! I'm trying to fool everyone into thinking I am a really serious photographer :)

I like the shot...and yes it definately took alot of work
05/01/2013 09:34:04 AM · #9
Sorry but I was one that gave it a low score. Not really concerned with how long or difficult the photo was to create. The image did not capture my attention. While I can appreciate the effort in making an image, if the image is not pleasing to me visually or make me think about the meaning then all the effort is wasted.

In the end, you can not force me to "appreciate this d@*it"

Not saying you have to give it a good score to appreciate the work that went into it, or learn something new. Like I said in the begining this is not a thread to complain about my score. I just don't think many people realized it was only 4 flowers. And no not everyone is going to give a bunch of flowers in a vase a good score.

Of course looking at your average score given you probably are not going to give much of anything a good score.

I am curious, did you not have more flowers available? Or did you just use 4 flowers to challenge yourself?

redacted. yikes.

Really people do you have to turn everything into a fight or debate are you that bored???? My title was just something to get peoples attention. I just was excited about the process and wanted to share.

yes it would have been easier to use a full vase of flowers but that wan't the point of my experiment. I wanted to see if I could make a full bouquet out of just a few flowers.

Take my notes or leave them. I wasn't looking for a critique I think the score I was given was fair. I was just posting so that others could benefit from my experiment.

That is all I have to say on the subject. Thank you for the nice comments, even though I wasn't necessarily posting for that reason. I could even take the mean ones if they were not put at me in a malicious way. Do some of you even think before you post? or are you just naturally bullies and don't even realize how hurtful your comments can be.

Thanks for sharing the notes on how you achieved your experiment Jenn. Very well done.

Out of curiousity just how many takes did it take to get the perfect one? I'm sure some were ruined by camera movement if you pressed the black paper too hard to the lens.

Also, when you say dimly lit room was the room totally enclosed (interior with no windows) lit with lights or was there late afternoon sun streaming into the room?

As for the thread title, I understand completely why you did it. If you don't have a attention getting title chances are 80% of the audience will not click or bother to read it. Naysayers don't believe me - Food for thought: when you go to a newsfeed site how do you choose the stories you will read? Yup, title will get you to click and read.

You got attention. Maybe not the kind of attention and accolades for your efforts you were seeking, but attention all the same. You get one negative response and get all passive aggressive with your reply.

It wasn't the negative comment that made me mad it was the way it was said. There are nicer ways to say things.

Thanks for the notes on how you created this image Jenn. Great job. I was wondering exactly what you did to keep the vase sharp. BTW, after reading the 1st sentence of you initial post, it was crystal clear that your intent in creating this thread was just to share your technique regardless of what folks may think of the actual image.

I've experimented a little bit with similar techniques. Did you try to reposition the flowers without covering the lens? Sometimes if the light is dim enough and you are quick enough, the slight exposure of your hand will not stay recorded. Just curious.

A great reference for these type of exposures is DPC member GraphicFunk. Take a look at his portfolio and notes sometime. Quite interesting.

Congrats on the good finish for your image. I think it is a very creative take on the spring flowers theme.

I'd hardly call the criticism here mean-spirited, yet it obviously got your dander up enough to put you on the attack.

Thanks for posting your technique Jenn. It's the main reason I am still here on this site, to learn new things from more talented photogs. Congrats on a really great result.

Most of voters don't look at the images for more than 2-3 seconds and those ones never wonder how an image has been done. It doesn't mean that a photo must be wonderful only because the technique used to get it is very hard, but at least we hope that voters are aware of what they are watching.

I used long exposure to get something out of the box but it never worked (honestly most of them weren't special images):

I'm not sure why yours didn't score very well. But probably it didn't convey the idea of 'spring'.

Well it was quite a process, I tried about 10 photographs on white, most didn't work but this one sort of did, I just couldn't get the background to be lit correctly, in this situation there was one window with a little light coming into a dimly lit basement the sun was not directly shining through the window:

I decided to try again in a different spot with less light, I tried about 10 photographs there and none of those came out well at all, the first bunch of flowers would get too overexposed before the last bunch had a chance.

So I moved back to the original lighting and tried again with a different background. I thought the door's texture would be nice coming through and also be much easier to light.
05/01/2013 06:13:51 PM · #23
I think it was a lovely experiment but the result puts emphasis on the sharp door losing the flowers in the process. Having simpler background may have made this a killer image.
PS Why not use ND filters in a bright room?

I thought this was a good observation and thought I would answer it here rather than on the comments since more people will see it here. As you can see below the simpler background just didn't seem to work. I am sure there is a way but I couldn't figure it out. I don't have ND filters but I'm not sure they would have helped in this situation since the problem is getting the background to be more exposed than the flowers. Every time I tried to get the background light enough the flowers would disappear. I appreciate that not everyone would like the textured background, perhaps I should have applied as much processing to it. I like it the way it is but I can see how it wouldn't appeal to everyone.

Heed your own advice, please, and don't attack others.

Anyway, my 2 cents:
In my book, you lost more points on the "meeting the challenge" aspect than you did on "execution." I'm sure this is what many others felt, so rather than assuming others didn't appreciate your technical effort (and going on to plug it here), consider whether the image was a good fit for the challenge. To me, reminders that flowers will wilt and wood will age are not what I expect from a "Spring" challenge. Because of that, I gave you a 5 instead of an 8.

Now that I see your technique, I have to say, nice job getting 4 tulips to look like... well, a lot; I would've never guessed there were only 4. However, I can't say I appreciate the photo more, I just appreciate that you know how to get a lot out of a little. That's a commendable character quality that I wish I had. What I don't appreciate is you plugging your image, when you could have written an official tutorial instead.

I still don't understand how it could get 1s or 2s, except for people not following directions (letting their thoughts on the legality of the photo affect the score they give).

I don't know if you include my question in your rant but this crap is exactly why I have curtailed my time on the site. You can't say anything anymore without someone taking offense. Mine was a legit question that I was curious about so if it offended you, my bad. I can't even see what you are talking about. Everyone was complimentary, one guy says he gave you a low score and I asked a question. Why people post things on the WORLD WIDE WEB and then complain about the responses they get is beyond me.
