Hi! Was wondering if it is safe to buy an annual membership once again, I have noticed the member challenges are once again getting kind of interesting. I will definitely buy at least a month ( got to enter Abandoned Ii) but am not sure about the full year. Is DP still solvent and doing okay?

I've done the math...

Without quoting numbers, I'm fairly comfortable predicting that DPC will be around for a while yet to come.

I think your reasoning is sound ;)

Considering how long it's been around, I doubt it's going anywhere soon. If you're sinking the money for a month, I'd go ahead an get the year, otherwise you're wasting more money if you just join again after the month. :)

It is more because of my upset at scores. I hope I have gotten over scores, and just enter for its original intent, as a weekly challenge that is fun, and pushes our limits and abilities. I want to keep that spirit in mind, but I forget very easy. Hope I have grown up some and have mellowed and can handle it.

Do you know how to turn off scores? I highly recommend that during a challenge. That way instead of being disappointed all week long, you're only disappointed (or perhaps pleasantly surprised!) once, at the end of the challenge. Really makes the place much more enjoyable if you discount all the feuding and such.... :-)

Best post ever. Thanks for the smile Deb...

It's a sick, sad world. You're renewed membership may be the only thing that can save us.

Ah, JunieMoon I remember our conversations early on when we were both struggling on how to use this strange new world of digital. I wandered through your Challenge entries - 179 of them! - that's a pretty good start. And I randomly opened a few. You've been experimenting and developing ever since you got here.

But DPC has changed, and so have we. Here's an image from your early days with a low score and 42 amazingly gentle comments:
The attention to detail in the recreation of this image is amazing. You were punished for your soft focus and should not have been. As a matter of fact, again opening images at random, I see you continued to experiment with soft focus. (So there, voters!)

Your scores have improved, your experiments have continued. So, can you continue this type of photography on your own without feedback from the DPC crowd?

Naturally, the two-way street of DPC is improved by the participation of its members.

I haven't seen Langdon's wallet, but I'd guess it is about the same as ever.

People argue, people quit, other people get mad and argue. SC does something and then we all get mad at the SC. They get mad back. Don gets his torches, only to have the voice of reason rear its ugly head.

Life goes on, and we renew. Same old story. You are probably safe for a few more trips around the sun. Unless, of course, you live in a flammable village,

I do not worry about what I do photographically. I have not stopped experimenting because DP has been on the back burner for me for the past few years. I knew it was having some issues a few years ago. Didn't the person who started it stop or something? Anyway, since I have been away I wanted to be sure all is well. It appears it is, I still see some of the founders still around, and so if I get my act together I will renew for a year. I never did quite get the style which draws the highest scores, and I am sure I still won't, but some of what I create may help someone that is willing to step out of the DP box, as I still do with my art photography. It's just one more form to try.

That's it, Langdon. I thought he left and somebody else took over. I don't live in a flammable village, though it sounds like it would make an interesting photo.

Well, JunieMoon, taking your post completely literally, and without looking into Langdon's wallet, I am fairly sure your $25 will purchase a full year of membership in DPC.

If not, well, you might find one nice dinner at a pleasant restaurant near you for a similar price (not including tax).

Choices, choices.

Honestly, it's ludicrous to assume that the site itself would be in peril because of a little skirmish in the forums.

The site is about the challenges and the photography. The forums are the little fluff that go on top.

Are numbers down? yeah, probably, but that's because the internet is changing. "Photography" is getting more and more widespread, but people are getting lazier and lazier.

Android phones and apps like Instagram make previously rather involved photoshop processing styles available at the tap of a screen. People aren't learning more about how to hone an art and they are becoming more jaded to the real gems that fade into the mix. WAYYY more people are getting DSLR's and there's P&S cameras that are coming too that might add another layer to people becoming jaded.

People in general are becoming less willing to put hard work into learning to do something well that requires a significant investment of time and effort.

But does that mean that DPC is going down? Hardly.

Dropping costs of net hosting and online server storage mean that overhead is dropping and when your overhead drops, it becomes exponentially harder to dislodge. A friend of mine still runs a BBS (that generates no income) because of this and just rekindled it because his costs just dropped from 50 bucks a month to 12 bucks a month. At that point, why bother stopping.

DPC does generate revenue, so even if 99% of the members disappear, it will still be around for a long time because costs are much lower than a business in any other sector. If you had a regular business with manufacturing, a storefront and large numbers of staff, and your customer base dropped, it could go under in a flash. Look at what is happening in retail. But this is not an issue for a website type business.

So breathe easy, open that wallet and slap that plastic down!

People are still entering photos, still voting and still participating. If what you want to get out of it is a good community, good challenges, and the occasional insightful comment, this is a pretty damn good place.

Really?

That's kinda silly.

I'm so confident that DPC will be here a year from now (despite the obvious problems that any site goes through), that if it does go "belly up" before your renewed year is up, email me and I'll send you a pro-rated refund of the time you didn't get.

PM me for my email addy.
