On February 28th, I bought Lightroom 3 for half the regular price ($159) I knew that Lightroom 4 was coming out, but I had received a number of brand new textbooks for version 3 from a friend in the book industry and I thought since I had never used it before, this was the better deal. Half price software, free textbooks, I could upgrade later to 4 and spread the cost out. I also have just purchased a new tripod, some filters and other miscellaneous photo gear so spreading out the cost was sounding ideal.

Than it is announced that version 4 is going to be half the historical price, the same as what I paid. Suddenly my deal didn't seem so great anymore. I contacted Adobe about returning the software and they told me they would give me the upgrade for free and basically anyone who bought Lightroom 3 for the half price deal, could get a free upgrade, assuming they contacted Adobe and asked for it.

So just throwing this out there in case anyone recently purchased Lightroom 3.

Good for you for calling and asking about it, and good on Adobe for a nice example of good customer service.

did 4 come out yet? is it worth the upgrade?

I don't really follow the Adobe "upgrade schedule" stuff closely. I upgraded from LR2 to LR3 less than 24 hours before LR4 was released. Doh! I called Adobe after I saw all of the "Lightroom 4 is so awesome" threads and they agreed to basically change my LR3 upgrade to the LR4.

It's out. I think so. YMMV.

Yes it's out and yes it's worth it I think, amongst other great improvments there are no more halos when you push the clarity.

I'm honestly not sure if it is worth the upgrade, I am completely new to Lightroom. In my case, it was worth it as the cost was the same and if I am going to start teaching myself, it makes sense to learn on the newest version.

But for people that already have it, I can't give an answer.

Bottom line, even if you have the latest (3.6), yes, 4.0 is worth the upgrade, for the Develop module improvements alone. As jagar posted, there are improvements in processes like clarify that are almost worth the upgrade by themselves.
Also remember that going forward any updates for new cameras will apply only to 4.X, so if you plan on upgrading your body and Lr is a part of your workflow, you'll need to be up to date to have support for the new camera.

Do you have to have photoshop for this? Is lightroom an add-on or a stand alone program?

Lightroom is a stand-alone program. It's main strengths are:
- Importing, grading, culling, keywording, cataloging all done quickly and efficiently.
- A great RAW processing engine
- Easy to adjust one shot in a series and copy settings to others.
- Quick, intuitive "developing" of RAW photos
- Flexible exporting to your chosen output, including direct linkage to some sharing sites.

Lightroom has limited spot-editing tools, so you won't use it for extensive retouching, but for what it does it is indispensable.

I purchased LR3 through B&H on 2/16/12 for $69. Although the Adobe que is currently overloaded and it took 5 business days to process my original program upgrade request(was told 1-3 business days), it was accepted today. For some reason, instead of just giving me a serial number and a download, they need to process the request and it will take 2-3 more business days before I get a serial number and download LR 4. But basically I bought LR 4 for $69! If you have any legit version of Lightroom 1-3 you can upgrade for $79. If you purchased LR 3 after 2/6/2012 you are eligible for a free upgrade, so don't miss out!
