I thought 800 pixels is the widest you can get in a challenge but then I've randomly seen this image -

It seems to be 900 pixels in width.

I'm confused?

Me too. Any ideas guys?

hmmm, hit his next few images too, they appear larger as well.

Looks like it may be a bug in the new image uploader allowing that. I'll tell Langdon.

Irregardless of the ability to do it due to the uploader, the challenge rules do state that the images must fit in the 800x box....

Which begs the questions:

A.) Was this done knowingly, attempting to skirt the rules?

B.) While they are no doubt outstanding photographs, did they gain any advantage from their larger than normal size?

Which also means, they by rules should be DQ'ed right?

I hope not. It'd be like getting done for doing 70 in a 60 zone with no speed limits imposed. It's Langdon's fault. Unfortunate, yes. Advantageous, probably. But we have to live with it and the results, I think.

I would have to agree with Niall. I cannot guess if it was intentional or not, but I would say it was a site bug to allow it so let the results stand. Fix it for future challenges or, better yet, up the entry limit to 900 pixels.

The behavior of the old uploader was to reject the upload if it wasn't sized within 800x800. The new uploader accepts anything you throw at it, and resizes it if necessary (but you suffer the wrath of imagemagick's resize output).

That said, I'm having a little trouble reproducing it either by uploading a new image or copying from workshop. Is anyone able to?

Great idea! :-)

It's a tough one, though. You can break many rules knowingly that will result in DQ's, rules that aren't Langdon's fault I mean. I can see it go either way. Maybe this one shoudln't be different. I don't know. No doubt we'll find out eventually!

Copy from workshop?

Shocking turn of events. This is the kind of competitive behavior I'd expect from bvy, ubique or posthumous, but not a regular ribbon winner.

Are we going to get the promised 1000 now??

I guess you guys haven't seen the Horse picture that I believe was in a challenge measuring at least 2400+ pixels in one direction. Been searching and cannot find it yet. Stay tuned...

I tested this. I uploaded a 720x1080 image, which was 432 kb. It was resized to 533x800 and allowed in, so the file size must have been reduced, too.

But in this case, there is a speed limit imposed. That speed limit is 800 pixels. Everyone That's entered more than one challenge knows that the limit is 800 pixels. Why even try 900?

Exactly and a 100px advantage over the crowd certainly will help a score and a placement. I see no way around not DQing images found to be above the posted limit.

i resize in ps before i upload but when you look through it does stand out, funny didn't recognise it during challenge

I didn't explain my analogy. A 60 roadway loses its sign and speed cameras. The locals know the limit. But one day someone does 70 along our road. Is he liable for the speeding ticket? The speed limit is known. But it isn't enforced.

Maybe not a perfect analogy, but I think it represents the situation well enough. All I'm saying is it can be taken both ways and that the matter is not trivial to judge.

The sign never blew down. Every person who enters a challenge needs to click the box prior to uploading their entry that says you took the image within the correct time period and followed all the rules. The rules set regarding size of challenge entries is very specific.

And with 170 challenges entered, I would consider Allen a 'local'.

People,

my intention was not to get AllenP's photograph disqualified. I've been away from the site and haven't submitted in a long time so I thought the rules might have changed and was confused when I saw this image.

Please let's not call out for a witch burning session.

Poor analogy.

To fix yours: The speed limit signs are there, they say 60. The cars have a device that controls their top speed so they can't go over 60. This device now malfunctions and people are going 70+ with or without knowing it, yet the signs still says 60 and thus still liable for a ticket.

fyi, just fixing his analogy

I just uploaded an image.. 2.9MB and copied it into a challenge. No problems with the file size. It did drop the image size down to 800 max though.
