The way I understood the Golden ratio was that it's accurate if your main focal point of the image is more or less in one of the corners (top or bottom, left or right.) Am I oversimplifiying way too much? I may just be thick.

My image is sitting pretty much where I thought it would be, in the lower 5s. No DNMC comment at least!

fwiw most images I've seen so far just seem to be rule of thirds, not golden ratio...and yes I am taking a pummelling along with everyone else :-/

Sadly, everyone seems to be focusing on the "golden spiral". :( The page linked in the challenge rules describes golden sections, rectangles, triangles and more. The mathematical "ratio" can be applied to any of these...

As I understand it, the golden ratio refers to the size of the crop only. The spiral is used as an example of how best to place the focal point. There does not have to be a spiral in the picture to be golden. And there can be other shapes in the frame.

Oh, GAWD no.

The Golden Mean is mathematical ratio which can be applied (and IS applied in nature) in a number of ways. Its simplest manifestation would be a rectangle the short short side of which is 1 unit in length, and the long side of which is 1.61803399 units in length. This ratio, in nature, produces a beautiful spiral that we see over and over again; in the seeds of a sunflower, in the shell of a nautilus, in the arrangement of leaves around the stem of a growing plant, and so forth and so on.

When men discovered the ratio, they used it to create various harmonious "arrangements" that we might call "compositional rules": one of them, of course, is that the most pleasing rectangle is the "golden rectangle", but there are other ways to use the ratio, notably in the aforementioned spiral, and also in a diagonal composition.

The idea of the challenge was to get people thinking about this very significant number/ratio, NOT to get everyone to crop their images to a golden rectangle: although (arguably) that last might be the best way to contain the "golden compositions" the ratio produces...

IMHO too many words here (Robert, I'm not talking about you). People were confused and now everything is getting worse and the up and downs in the scores are the evidence of what I'm saying.

Take it easy :)

Apparently everyone agrees that I should go for a new low score instead of a new personal best

So being new in photography, I am sucking it up on the few challenges I have entered. But I wish People would give me criticism! I want to be a good photographer and take decent pictures, but when I get rated crappy scores and no one comments it sucks something fierce. I was told this was a good site to be criticised and learn how to be a better photographer, but it seems everyone wants to bash on your images and not tell you why. I hope this changes, I would think with all the "professional" photographers who have thousands and thousands of dollars worth of equipment would be kind enough to let us hobbiest know how to take a better picture...I guess I was wrong. I think too many people are caught up in their own fantasy land about their picture being 100% better than everyone else's. I know I don't take the best pictures, I just got my camera a few months ago, but come on people, help us out!

All I am saying is this... I hate everyone who voted on mine today... I do however love the ones who voted last night.

I went to sleep last night with a 7.7...

I then woke up with a 6.9...

I am no where near that now. Thank you trolls... HATE YOU!!! >:(

GAH!!

Okay, enough ranting.

Best bet for that is to wait until after the challenge is over then post your shot and ask for a critique. Speaking for myself I believe many do not leave much in the way of a critique because there are some people that do not want them and they may get a nasty message. There are many that will gladly offer advice after the challenge is over.

Rant for a 6.9?! O.o

My Day & Night image stayed over 8 for more than a day (half a day over 8.2), but I didn't complain for that :)

Heck no I am not ranting about the 6.9... I am ranting about the score I have right now compared to that! Lol.

i left the house at 6.30am got back in at 9.30pm with my boy got him bathed and bedded then managed to actually sit down for 30 mins with a cuppa to vote, so i voted on 100% commented on 7%, if your shot is just average though and has no glaring obvious faults then it will get less comments, one thing people seem to forget that its still got to be a decent picture even if it fits the challenge if it has no wow or intrinsic value then you will get an average score

Yes, please do. Ever since the debate about whether the entries in this challenge fit within people's perception of what the Golden Ratio is, my score has been plummeting. I was pleasantly surprised this morning to find it at 6.7 at 25 votes, but now it went to 6.3 with only a few more votes. It appeared that a few people went back and lowered their votes :(

Now go and put them back where they were!

Chill out snowboarder. We all wish that we could get some more feedback regarding our entries, but it takes time to do so. Many people simply don't take the time to comment on every image and if they did then often the quality of the comment is lacking.

If you don't get enough constructive criticism by the time the challenge is over then you can ask for it by PM to someone or start a thread asking for feedback. I'll try to remember to take a look for you entry after the challenge is over and comment. This is definitely a good place to learn so don't give up on us.

Well, I can honestly say that my Golden Rule fits the challenge just about as good as you get yet I still fell harder than a sack of rocks.

Still lowering might I add. Between the last 3 votes I have nearly dropped a full point... Again. Lol.

This is literally becoming more amusing that it is annoying. I would love to see this go below a 6...

did you see my wild swings? I actually like it, seems like I may have finally entered a love it or hate it shot.
