I took the plunge recently and upgraded to a LG IPS231 monitor. Unfortunately, when it arrived and hooked it all up there was a nasty backlighting bleed in one corner. I'm sending it back, but they're only offering a refund since they don't have any in stock. I can get the same monitor for a little more money from Newegg. It's a nice monitor if it didn't have that defect, but since I'm buying again I figured I'd ask for other recommendation options.

I'm looking for an IPS monitor with a 6ms or less refresh rate. I paid about $230 for the first one, and Newegg is asking $250. I'd like to stay roughly in that range. This LG IPS231 had the neat feature of being able to spin to a vertical orientation, but that's not essential (though it's really cool!).

Don't want to sound too stupid, but when you set up your monitor, did you have speakers next to it? Sometimes unshielded speakers will cause bleeding if too close.

Nope, nowhere near speakers currently or during install. Do LCD's even do that anymore? I know CRT's did...

Well, my Samsung T240 did when I put it too close to my wireless headphones base unit.

I once had my speakers too close and it made my ears bleed... ;-)

I don't think that any LCD monitor I'm aware of has this problem. It's a problem with DRTs for sure, the magnetic field from the speakers bends the electron beam.
I'm looking at this monitor right now. Looks like a winner, but may be more than you want to spend, and it does not pivot (something I am not concerned with). It does have a smaller brother, which might be of interest.

I have the Dell Ultrasharp 23 inch version. It was very off-color for a supposedly pre-calibrated monitor and I couldn't calibrate it from the Mac like I have on all previous monitors. It kept reverting so I bought a Spyder III Elite (should have years ago) and it still wouldn't hold the calibration. I sent it back to Dell and they sent me a new identical one. It won't really calibrate from the Mac or Spyder either but wasn't as off-color. It immediately reverts back to it's settings when calibrated from the Mac or the Spyder. (Mac OSX.5) I finally used the Spyder to calibrate it and got the settings in the monitor menu to nearly match what the Spyder wanted. It is amazingly sharp and now that I did get the color settled I do like it. Just maddening that it won't kepp the calibration that the Spyder sets for it since my brandy new spyder also read ambient current light.

I use an HP LP2475W IPS (Wide Gamut) 24" monitor that I calibrate with my Spyder3Studio kit. All is good. :)

Actually, I believe the Dell Ultrasharp 23 inch is the same panel as the LG IPS231 within a different shell. My monitor goes back in the mail tomorrow, but I still have it hooked up and am playing around with it. I calibrated it with my Huey, but I too had trouble. The brightness seems a bit out of control, and I couldn't get it set quite right.

It does seem to be crisp though. I'm not coming from a terribly crappy monitor, so I'm not seeing a huge improvement, but it is noticeable. I think I'm going to risk getting another one from Newegg of the same kind.

Here's hoping I don't get another lemon...

Close to natural

I have the exact same thing. It does the job nicely. Quite a bit more than $250, however.

Yes, definitely more, but worth the investment. Ann, when you say you have the exact thing are you talking just the monitor or do you also calibrate with the Spyder3?

The new LG IPS231 arrived today from Newegg, and I've just hooked it up. Guess what, it's not a lemon! I'm glad I risked getting the same monitor again. It is a pretty nice monitor for the money.

I'm awaiting arrival of my Dell U2711. Should be here on Friday. Hopefully by that time I will also have an operational desktop computer (my desktop took a puke about a month ago and I've been waiting for the Z68 chipset debut to reanimate it).

Both. The monitor and the Spyder 3.

Me too. A really good balance between price and performance.
