| I have never given higher scores. Without compensating at all for the limited equipment, I thought, overall, the entries were amazing. Maybe with simpler equipment, we realize we have to give more thought to a shot rather than letting expensive equipment carry us. I don't know. I just know it was a pleasure seeing every one of them. |

| Really? I didn't think there were a lot of amazing pictures, in fact it was one of my lowest scoring challenges, and I think I am a fair voter. |

You are right. I know someone who said they had to do...this, that,,,,this....that...and this....in order to get a good shot with their phone. However, they do not do...this...that ....this and that....when they use their DSLR !!!
(This and that is being used as to not draw attention to a particular entry)

I agree with you Karen. There are some technically good shots in there as well as some cool artistic ones, but there are a lot of poor snaps that really have too many issues to mention...

Yes, exactly. I enjoyed the lo-fi snaps and presentations. Still handed out only a few very high votes, but overall my average for the challenge was higher than usual. |

| I think the reason they're good is becuse having a device that doesnt doo all the work for you, just makes you think a bit more about the image you are shooting rather than having bundles of technology thrown in. |

The funny thing is that my entry was a shot of opportunity without time for much thought. I believe one skill I have learned over the last several years is the ability to recognize a potentially good shot when it is in front of me.

I downloaded an HDR Android app. It really works. However, it only takes two shots and puts them together....I'd like to have three or more. Has an auto mode and a manual mode. You can go -3 to +3. Unlike the other apps that just fake an HDR, this one actually shoots for it.
Called Pro HDR and I think it has a version for Iphone.
I'll post some shots in a bit. |

....Ha....when you look in the file system on the phone, it actually stores three shots....the low, the high and the HDR version. I just read that these type apps will expand now that the android allows 3rd party developers access to the "exposure" settings.

In general, the phone camera images exceeded my expectations. Some wonderfully creative images showed up. This is good. Did I expect the phone camera images would be equal to images from full featured cameras? No. But, many images in this challenge are as good as (some better than) a whole bunch of images in regular challenges. (s.t. validation) So, it's not the equipment, it's the artist in you that makes the difference. Well, at least it's fun to discover the constraint to our artistic efforts is "sometimes" the equipment and not the limit of our skills. Too often we get dragged down the path of the hoax that more $$$ spent on equipment and software will somehow improve our photos. Our egos are vulnerable and susceptible to the myriad of marketing departments of corporations.
Rumored to be released in September 2011 is an 8 Megapixel camera on the iPhone 5. (I'm just as vulnerable as the rest of you.) If that happens, then there will be additional situations of overlap with our DLSRs, where we will say more often, "...the best camera is the one you have with you."
Did I expect voters would alter their voting scales (out of sympathy) just because an image is shot from a camera phone? No! At least based on my challenge entry, votes seem fair for the caliber of the image. (somewhat lower than average) |
