Try copying the raws first into your computer (if you haven't done so)
Restart your computer (if you haven't done so)

I'm having the same problem, but closing and restarting doesn't do a thing. I only use this computer for Photoshop. There is plenty of space available. Would an external hard drive solve this problem? Thanks.

Based on the original post it's the RAM that's not big enough, not your hard disk space so an external drive will not make a difference except maybe to provide more space to the scratch disk.

How much RAM do you have and what settings are you using in photoshop for the scratch disk?

I have 4GB Ram and the settings are whatever the default was when I installed it. I haven't touched anything.

You need to say what OS and how much RAM you have now. With Windows 7 64 bit, I found 4 GB wasn't enough to have photoshop and anything else going. I swapped memory to get 8GB and all is well.

I have Windows 7 64-bit with 4 GB of RAM and the recommended percentage assigned to PS CS3. PS works fine with the files I send it.

What is the file size of the image(s) producing the error?
What is assigned as the scratch disk?
How much room is left on the scratch disk?

How do I find out how much room is left of the scratch disk?

I had that problem with save-for-web, I upgraded, went away. It started when I switch modes to 32 bit so I could use a filter. All is fine now, running on MAC

Everything I've heard is that CS5 needs lots of RAM to work properly. I've got 8GB on my Vista 64 bit machine and that feels like the bare minimum. You can easily add more to your computer.

If you click start-> my computer, you should be able to click on each hard drive and see in the the status bar how much each hard drive has in free space.

If you have more than one drive, I'd suggest putting a second hard drive as a secondary scratch disk.

It's usually preferable to clear up space on a drive that is running low rather than using an external drive as a secondary scratch disk, as the USB transfer speed (even on USB 2.0) is enough to bottleneck performance.

Even with 3-4 gigs of RAM, you shouldn't be getting out of memory errors just opening a raw file, IMO.

Have you tried holding Alt+Ctrl+Shift when opening Photoshop to clear all your preferences?

I've been running PS5 for about three months. I checked my free space and I have 518 GB of 596 GB free. I would think that would be enough. I called Abode and they told me to download the update, but when I try and do it I get a message saying I'm up-to-date.

The scratch disk is a physical disk which is identified in the PS preferences. Running low on scratch disk space could generate the not enough memory message when PS can't swap the way it needs to between RAM and scratch. Running several programs at the same time will produce the same error as each program is using a bit of the RAM reducing the amount available for PS.

For CS 5 needing lots of memory, I was running CS 5 on a MacBook Pro with 4GB of RAM and a 250 GB hard drive and had no trouble opening files. However, I've recently changed the HD to 500GB and upped the RAM to 8GB so now it just flies even with multi-layer files.

i ran cs5 on a dual core mobile processor with only 2 gb of ram, but i digress, not sure OS you guys are having problems with but with windows 7 (and vista) you can add a usb thumbdrive and windows will use it as extra ram, maybe try that.

My computer is a Dell and apparantly I cannot fit any additional ram. I tried running PS last night and had no problems. It looks like its going to be a hit and miss thing. Abode was no help. They e-mail me instructions that had nothing to do with my problem. I'm going to try and have nothing running except PS and hope for the best for now. Thanks to everyone for their suggestions.

I've also got 4gb RAM. I tend to have far too many programs running at the same time. CS5 rarely crashes, but when I am using CS5 I often find that Excel becomes unresponsive. I think I am going to have to get more RAM to keep things running smoothly.

That's a common problem... machines usually only have four RAM slots (some only two) and in order to increase RAM, you are often forced to toss what you've got.

One thing that can affect Ps is leaving it open for long periods. My experience is that it tends to leak memory. Closing it when you're not actively using it, and closing it every couple hours or so during an extended work session, will help *if* this is part of your issue. I'm not certain it is, but it may be.

i'm using acer, specs are: core i5,4gb of ram, 500g hd,1gb of videocard,i encountered this problem
doing some effects in cs5 "the content-aware" it's big question mark in my mind!!!what's wrong with my PC???
07/12/2011 11:21:59 AM · #23
If you are using content aware fill or heal to very large parts of your image you will get this message. I would start with smaller portions, divide the area up into sections and attack each section at once.

In my experience, PS doesn't clear it's allocated memory very well. If you leave the program open and close a document, most of the time (at least on my computer) it will not free that used memory up. Sometimes when working on multiple large documents, I will occasionally have to save, close everything and reopen my current doc. This is especially true if I am using content aware fill on a fairly large portion of an image.

Yep, Ps tends to not clean up after itself. Here are a few questions:
1.) Which OS are you running?
2.) Are you running the 32-bit or 64-bit version of the OS?
3.) How much memory are you allowing Ps to use (under Edit>Preferences>Performance)?
4.) How many history states and cache levels are you retaining?
5.) How much scratch disk space is available for Ps?
Running 32-bit Ps for long periods of time (even leaving it inactive) can result in out-of memory conditions. I believe there are memory leaks, at least up to CS4. I have not had this issue when running 64-bit Ps under 64-bit Win7, however.
If you are running a 32-bit OS, you will also have a maximum of about 3GB available to applications. Ps is usually set to a maximum memory usage of 55% as a default, so it can only utilize about 1.65GB. It's easy to overrun that.
