Okay, not so much a complaining thread, more of a "can some one explain it' thread. Post your photo's you'd like explained here.

I'll start. I finished above a 6 (6.0319), which is always nice, with this image

A similar image, admittedly stronger, finished 4th for me in the October Free Study

I was hoping for my 'Best of' to fall in the 6.4-6.5 range, but finished a full 8/10 of a point below the Free Study shot. What I am looking for here is WHY is one worth 8/10 more than the other. paulbtlw gave his explanation in the comments (he doesn't like seeing the people), but I'd like to hear others.

At first, I thought maybe I had gone to the well too many time with it, but we've seen Juliet's surfer and William's tulips & windmill before (maybe their well is just deeper). Did I have a dumb title this time? People don't like P-Diddy (or whatever it is he's calling himself these days)? You like the green arrow better than the red light?

BTW - my 'Best of 2009' scored just a smidgen higher (by 0.0005). I don't think it's nearly as good.

Larry - I gave your entry a 6. The BW conversion is good, but it looks like it has quite of bit of noise reduction added giving it that milky look.

Also, if I had to pick a subject of the image I would have to pick P Diddy. I don't think that was your intention, but that's where my eye goes every time. In your provious image the message of the hussle and bustle, the mess of signs, and the general chaos of city life came through loud and clear. I don't get that feeling in your Best of 2010 entry.

Since mine finished one notch above yours, I'll throw it in here.

I was pretty excited after the fist 20 votes and the average was above 6.75. After that it dove down to 6 and pretty much stayed there.

I thought it was a pretty strong image and I'm a little surpised it couldn't garner much over a 6 flat.

i got less than a 5 for but i agree it's not my best work. i entered it because i had to trek a long way and wait for this opening in the clouds and i figured somehow i would be voted according to my effort. but all people see is the end result. i also used a p&s. i'm not really complaining, just explaining.

Sub-six, really? I'm guessing most people that voted it under a 5 can't even turn on my light meter. It's ok though, I got paid...

I thought that was a spectacular shot. I can't understand why it didn't do better myself.

there are alot of voters that vote-down lingerie/nude shots. some of them will openly say so, most dont have the courage to admit it, and just drop low votes on them despite the technical excellence in many of them

I really thought this was better than the shot I submitted for FS months earlier...

I think it was just a point of being too close to the "6" mark that killed the vote. The shot just didn't "wow" enough 7+ votes and continuously got drug down by 6 votes.

Not to brag, but I know something about that :) This shot got nailed for sexual content (not only) and I actually received a few very aggressive and shocking comments...

Well, at least this one was better than last years entry. I switched to this because I thought it would score a low 6. My other choice was a portrait, which I probably should have stuck with.

I never thought this would end up with a 6 as it is not what I call "DPC friendly", but I like it and it would have been nice to at least get a 5.5 on it. Nothing posted here so far received lower than a 6 from me and I only gave out 3 fours as I thought almost everything entered deserved a 5 or higher. The low votes some very excellent images received from a few voters do bother me. :-(

Well, if a light year is a measure of distance, I suppose a light meter is a measure of time :)

Voted it a 8. Some technical nits but if you cant look beyond that for this scene it's just not in that person's taste. That does not mean it's not a very good photo

I am going to rant just a little.

This is my entry and I knew before I entered it that it would get hammered by voters, I was obviously okay with that. When I was looking through my shots from 2010 trying to decide which shot to use I kept coming back to this one because I liked it. I liked the motion and especially the colors.
I could have entered a couple of different landscape shots or mediocre portrait shots, but they would have just been poor examples of those types of shots. There would have been countless better examples of those and I would have scored a low 5 or sub 5 with them anyway. I understand my limits as a photographer right now, truly I don't even consider myself a photographer, I am an amateur picture taker.
So, as I considered all these things I decided to enter the one shot I was considering that I knew would not just be a poor example of other shots. Some might say "then why enter anything at all?" but the point of this site is not just to get better but also to share photos you think others will enjoy, and while I knew that the majority would not particularly care for my entry, I thought there would be at least a few that would enjoy it. That theory was proven true by the comments I received(aside from one that is).

Just a little insight on how an amateur picture taker decides to enter a challenge as big as a "Best of" on a site full of amazing photographers.

Not that I don't like the b/w and I gave it a good score but during voting I was wondering why not color? I'd love to see that version too if you have it!!!

I think my one got just about where it should have.

I was tossing up between that and this

and asked about 10 of my friends which I should use, and they all said the cat. I disagreed, but figured 'broad appeal' demanded the cat be entered.

I've been playing around with B&W a lot lately. I converted to B&W first and then tweaked it some. The original color is kind of blah. So that's why B&W.

Even though I scored a PB, I thought my shot would have scored a little better. So be it.
