I've been pondering shooting film for some time now as an accompaniment to my digital, and to my delight, my wife has gone and surprised me with a Nikon F100 at Christmas!

So I have 3 questions for those of you in the UK who shoot film:

Where is the best place you've found to buy film, either online or retail?

Where do you get it developed / prints done?

Do you get the prints done or get the photo CD's?

Thanks in advance!

Plenty here > Amazon - 35mm camera film

and here > 7dayshop.com

You can get films processed at Tesco, Boots or Snappy Snaps etc. I have used Tesco in the past and they were fine, normally get a photo cd with prints.

I have not shot film for a while now so maybe time for me to get my Canon Eos 5 out :-)

Maybe it's just me, but I don't see any POINT in shooting film if you are not going to make the prints yourself. And it's easier to process the film than it is to make prints, so you might as well do that yourself too.

That's my take on it anyway. For me, the whole joy of working in film was the hands-on, absolute-control aspect of it. I never had anyone else printing my work, except in my darkroom under my direct supervision.

Thanks both! I do plan on developing it myself, but right now since I just migrated back from Australia I'm at the parents and I don't think the would appreciate me setting up a dark room in their house :)

I agree though, that's why I never went to film until recently, hopefully soon I'll find my own place and setup a darkroom.

Set one up in a bag then :)

To process film, all you need is a dark bag and a tank (the smallest being about 3 inches high by 5 inches around). No 'room' needed at all. Printing needs space, but film, almost none.

You know I was actually looking at the bag option last night, I figured if I could develop the film then I could scan the negatives until I have space for the printing.

A Nikon F100 for Christmas? Nice!! I just got one too! Fun camera. I don't know about the UK, but over here B&W needs to be done at home or sent out to a lab. For color... its a toss up. I either do it myself (and it it fairly simple) or take it to a local one hour outlet. For just negatives, no prints, I pay $2 US. Then scan myself with an Epson V700 which does a great job. Other scanners do well too I'm told.

Once you start doing your own, it is a small step to medium format. Then large format! Have fun and post some images here--> DPC film thread. It can get a little lonely there sometimes.

I haven't used these guys myself as I managed finally to find somewhere here in Finland, but one of my friends uses this place.
