I was looking at cameras, thinking about a possible upgrade and somehow, before I could stop, I had started adding item to my basket. I didn't think I had a basket...a bit feminine for me...but apparently I had one:)

What went into it? A Nikon D700...oh my!

A Nikon 28-300mm f3.5-5.6 G AF-S ED VR Lens and a Kenko Pro 300 2x teleconvertor.

The main problem now is, I will have to sell the D300, the 18-200mm DX lens, the Sigma 10-20mm DX lens and perhaps the Nikon 70-300mm?

Luckily the battery grip on the D300 fits the D700. Should get a parcel on Tuesday:)))

Nooooo you got the D700 before the price drop!

Seriously, a lot of people are expecting a price drop whenever the D700s/D700x/D800 comes out, which should be within the next year.

What are you asking prices for those three lenses? I'm kind of interested in all of them (maybe not so much the Sigma since the 8-16mm is out now).

Ohh man, I hate it when that happens, those pesky baskets have caught me out in the past too!

Enjoy the new toy when it arrives!

Hmmmmm. . . and only one owner so far! :)

Expanding my horizons!

As an aside, I'm jealous of the purchase! Congrats!

Lucky you Steve. Enjoy it when it arrives. I've been tempted a few times, but I'm holding off just in case there is an upgrade.

Steve, I promise you you'll love the D700. Great camera! I never thought I'd love any camera as much as I love my D70 but the D700 is getting very close...

AH-HA... I knew something was going on here. IreneM, you are working for Nikon... they pay you per ribbon you win over the top. Only 1 (you) out of top 5 ribbon winners using only Nikon. Nikon says "get as much as you can, however you can" so they can brag about it and sell more Nikons :-|

scalvert, DrAchoo, Judi and timfythetoo... it's time to make a phone call to Canon HQ to see how much they offer :P

The D700 is a wonderful camera, but will you miss the added magnification from the D300? I know I would as I am from the "School of Telephoto" and firmly believe that everything looks better from far, far away.

Thanks guys:) It has been a long couple of months trying to decide whether to or not, also should I have waited for Photokina? Well, the D700 is same basic camera as the D3, and that is still a much sought after camera. I could have bought a second hand D3, but I prefer the 2 years warranty with new Nikons.

You're right Morgan I will miss that extra reach for awhile, but the Sigma 150-500mm is a FF lens, and the new 28-300 will be a direct replacement for the 18-200mm and the 70-300mm will also be redundant. It's a shame about the Sigma 10-20, but I will have to work around that for a while.

Anyway, Sevlow It was all the chat about cameras on Saturday that put the thought back in my mind:)

Lesson one, Mike, always blame someone else:)) Deny all knowledge of actually hitting the checkout button and promise this will be the final camera cos Nikon don't make anything better at the moment. Perm two of the three and you've got away with it again:))

When I switched to full frame I thought that I was going to miss the extra reach of the 1.5x crop factor. I almost always used my 70-200 VR on my D80 because it was a lot faster than the 80-400 VR. But with the D700 I've been using the 80-400 instead of the 70-200 to make up for the crop factor reach.

I can up the ISO on the D700 without any problematic side effects like noise and use the slower 80-400 VR. In fact, I've never used the 80-400 as much before the upgrade as I do now and the shots are fantastic. On the D80 I felt like the 80-400 was soft but on the D700 the shots captured with the 80-400 seem to be as good as what I was getting with the 70-200 on the D80.

Come to think of it, I don't remember even putting the 70-200 on the D700 yet.
