.. or NOT. Just kidding:-)

Welcome to the fun that DPC used to be... have a nice evening (or day) wherever you are!

Btw Langdon, any plans to revamp the looks of the website? Or everyone love it the way it is?:-)

1x is a funeral home by design. I don't think Langdon would even touch 1x with a 45 mile long stick. They are the most disgusting people ever gathered in one place. Their motto "We don't wear pants all day". I HATE 1x (with all my heart).

I do like the random photo shuffle. Wish we had it here.

It's just not the same as a random.

We should be more cocky. add a random image everyday, a ribbon winner if you will.

the caption below will say, "this photo is better than yours"
ha, maybe not.

The 2 sites are apples and oranges.

1X is less about "community" - the Forum Boards are not very active there.
It's less US Centric - way more East Euro/Asian.
Like DPC it's a big tent, but the core style there is probably more emotive, black and white, portraiture driven.
It's not centered around a contest, but on the other hand, there are a panel of unelected judges who decide what gets in and what doesn't (sort of like if the site council were the sole voters).

Like here, there are some amazingly talented photographers.

This site should do a photo of the day, or week, on the front page that langdon chooses, just to get that person a little help or popularity. or just to see a nice image :-)

Given that DPC is very much forum-oriented and challenge-centric, it's hard to see that happening; for it to work at all, the selected image would be driving either challenge results or forum postings out of their current place on the visible front page.

Do you really think Langdon even looks at the site except when it's broke? I doubt he does much more than push a couple buttons each week and cashes the check and pays the server bills.

I thought I would give 1X a try, never had a photo accepted which does not offend me as I am nowhere near the caliber of alot of photographers there. What DID bother me is, not only do they moderate the pictures but the comments as well! I got a message that my comment on a picture was deleted because it was only complimentary and not constuctive enough. Thats when I knew I didn't want to be there.
The day this site becomes more 1X like is the day I leave.

Was that a long time ago? I've added plenty of complimentary comments without a hint of constructiveness and never received any such message.

I look at 1x daily and it is rare that I don't find something that is flat out inspiring.

perhaps the photo was in some other form of judging, but it was not long ago

It was probably in screening or critique. Since you can earn extra uploads by commenting in screening or in the critique section we had people just putting "wow, great" comments up to get additional image uploads. On the published pics you can put all the kind words you want... :D

Ha! I'd never made the connection. How many screeners do we have in our DPC community?

He does (and cares) a fair sight more than that, but that isn't what this discussion is about.

I find the attitude at 1X to be...well...a bit too serious and self-important. The work is generally good, but I just try not to read anything while I'm there.

WOW! I had never heard of 1x and know nothing about the site, but I went there and clicked on portraits in the right column just to see what was there. I was very impressed with the quality of work on that first page. Perhaps the people who run the site are a bit pompous, I don't know, but there is clearly some photographic talent there as well. Mostly it made me think we should be pushing each other to get better rather than bashing each other so much...

I don't know what the fuss is about. 1X.com has some of the most amazing work and world class photographers. They are VERY selective as to what gets published. I was lucky to get one out of about eight submitted published there. At least anyone can have a free membership. Check it out.

Agreed -- I think that it has spectacular photos. I wish I could do work like that. *sigh*

OK, I see that... there is some very nice work there.... but.... it's a totally different type of site...

My thing with 1x is that yes, the work is good, often great or amazing--so the quality speaks for itself, which makes the overwhelming pretentiousness of the site all the more intolerable. (I keep trying to get over that, but I'm not doing a very good job. & PS, this is hardly to denigrate any contributors to the site or undermine the accomplishment of publication there. The photographers are great; the site designers are, IMMHBPNSHO, thoroughly obnoxious.)

Why do you say the site is pretentious or the designers obnoxious?
