I wanted to leave you a comment on this photo...

This photo speaks to me.

One has to read the title, and the challenge discription, and think about it for a second... and then it hits you.

This is not top notch photography, technically speaking. I'm not going to go into the technical problems with this photo, because I'm sure other commenters will. But for me, the tehnical rawness of the capture adds to the feeling of shyness, of subversion required to get the photo, of dispair of the photographer for never being able to talk to this girl.

A 10 from me, though I doubt you'll get out of the bottom quarter of the challenge, because so many voters here don't look past the glitz and flash and moderate oversaturation. Keep taking photos that mean something.

Greetings from the Critique Club!

First Impression - the most important one:
Aww! How cute!

Composition: This photo follows the rule of thirds nicely. The viewer is immediatley drawn to the baby, then the round frame of the drum leads the viewer's eye nicely around the perimiter of the photo, and right back into the main subject.

Subject: Aww, cute and cuddly. The expression is great! This photo really speaks from the heart. The viewer can easily tell that the photograph was taken with love. The message is obvious in this one. Unfortunatly for your score, the photo lacks the "wow appeal" that makes winners here. Notice my first impression was "aww," not "wow."

Technical (Colour and light): Quite well done. I imagine this was a bit of a complex setup, but you got the lighting just right. Not too much, though there could be a little less. Don't get me wrong, I like it just the way it is... but I think it also could have been nice with some more shadow and mood.

Relation to the Challenge: Yep, two, unrelated objects. Check.

To grow its vote?: Meh. I don't know that this subject is one that can score really highly here, at least if it's not the most incredible, moody, wonderfuly lit baby portrait possible. But I don't think you should care... this is a photo you can cherish, even if the rest of us don't think that its the best thing since Ansel Adams.

Summary: I think this is a photo you can be proud of, and something I would frame and put on my desk. It is quite nice, and you got a nice score. Keep shooting!

Critique the Critique: A lot of effort goes into writing these critiques and I would appreciate feedback on how I'm doing. Do my comments make sense? Am I on track or way off base? Do my comments make you want to pick up a meat cleaver? Please let me know via a PM if you found these comments helpful, or not so much so.

I've never shot a pro sports event or anything, so that was my first exposure (ha! ha!) to a row of cameras all shooting like crazy. Sometimes I don't know which were louder, the cameras or the bulls!

Skip, you certainly looked the part with that monster 'L' glass! :) Now I've just got to convince lee I need the Nikon equivalent. :)

I really like the mild grunge feeling to this photo. It looks a bit like one of the old Cindy Crawford adverts. The sharp contrast does well here.

Beautiful landscape! Looks almost like a painting. Even more impressive that you were able to get such dynamic range without spot editing. Good job!
