Actually, there would be no selective editing required to darken the background, all legal even in Basic Editing. Open the Selective Color Dialog in PS... select blacks from the top picklist, slide the bottom most slider to the right till you see the bk disappear.

Did I already mention how awesome this would look in print ;)

beautiful rendition. Can still see the washer in the background, but that can be fixed with further editing. The sharpness, detail, and color draw my attention away enough that I don't see it. Well kinda. :) 9
