This was taken straight on at him. Those are his front legs. He would fit on your pinky nail.

I don't think I've ever photographed one from above. I always go for the side view, for some reason. Maybe 'cuz the curve in the tail makes the bug look very oddly formed from this perspective. But that's OK; it's an Assassin Bug, and they're weird-looking from any angle. Nice macro :-)

Yep, I have photographed bugs for 30+ years and know all too well how they don't take direction!

I really struggled voting on this image. Whilst the sharpness, light and colours were exceptional I found the one out of focus stamen over the hoverfly's eye distracting. Well done on the HM.
