Very grainy image with lots of artifacts visible. Was this taken with a cellphone camera?

Greetings from the Critique Club

I'm glad you enjoyed shooting this one. That is at least half the battle in my opinion.

I think your overall idea was pretty creative, but somehow it missed the mark. As one of your commenters noticed, the lighting is a bit harsh, particularly on your main subject, the balloon. The background I personally was not too fond of. A plain coloured background would have served you better, either white or black (just my opinion remember). The watercolour effect is the thing I notice first about this image and really the background should be secondary to the subject matter (in this specific challenge).

Using borders is also risky on DPC. There are a lot of people who hate them and that can have a negative impact on the score. I personally like a border if I feel it somehow enhances the image and use them quite often myself. In this case however, I think the border was a bit heavy and is not really necessary. I think it gives the feeling that the image has been boxed up somehow. In addition, the balloon is framed a little bit too tightly to the left. I would like to see just a little bit more space to the top and left of the balloon.

I think overall you did a good job at attempting something a little bit different. A few things in your set up (including using a plain coloured balloon rather than a multi coloured one) could have pushed your score up over the 5.

Feel free to contact me if you want me to explain anything further.

Sarah.

Greetings from the Critique Club :)

My vote: 6. If I recall my first impression, it was something like: good portrait, without any technical flaws, but nothing studio-like. The nice colors go well with a cheerful expression.

Obviously it would have scored much higher if the challenge would just have been 'Full-Length Portrait'. One cannot expect everybody to rent a studio, but the minimum would have been to use a flash light as a fill. Maybe a specular reflection in her eyes would have been enough to create a little bit of studio mood.

The composition is solid, I like it. The location is very well chosen, it's a fantastic place for a portrait. The background does not interfere with the subject but does enhance it, as noticed by nikuser. The crop is a bit too tight. I am not as offended by it as LalliSig, but the toes for instance look as if they were physically touching the border. This looks a bit weird in a comical way, if this was your intention then it's OK.

The pose is not very flattering. I mean, only the slimmest models get away with a full frontal view. Tilting the body would have been far better I think, most notably because with leaning her against the pillar, it would have looked very natural and sophisticated (and no snapshot comment).

As already mentioned, technically it's very good. Optimal focus, nice contrast, beautiful color tones, good job!

If you have any questions or remarks about this critique, feel free to contact me.

I've decided to comment on every shot in this challenge, since I'm sitting at 1 comments, and I'd rather try and take a positive approach to this rather than simply whining about my score:

Perhaps just a little too background-busy for my tastes, and the white-balance seems a little off. (Possibly my monitor)

Comment by bassbone:
the perspective - looking down from above - seems to make the trees on the strip to get blended into the trees beyond.

the crop seems confining in the vertical direction. landscapes often benefit from a foreground grounding point to emphasize the depth of the scene - here we have no such grounding point
